A global philanthropy faced a common organizational challenge: how do we grow our culture as fast as our size and scope? A year prior, SharePoint had been introduced to increase collaboration across the organization and provide the platform for the new Intranet: Hopes and dreams were pinned on the Intranet as the ultimate cultural building instrument. However, we found it insufficient for connecting people to either work or each other. We conducted a usability study to iron out experience kinks; mobilized and trained power users for each major area; partnered with IT to increase general SharePoint user training and acceptance (it had been a big shift for managers to take on responsibility for their own administrative work); and liaised with Legal and HR to democratize the Intranet (encourage equal opportunity for diverse voices to express themselves across silos) and understand the impact on ways of working. Goodies included: an articulated vision for the Intranet, a strategy for building out an internal communications department, and updated manuals and protocols for power users.
